How WorkCalc UK checks its figures
UK payroll and employment rules change every April, and many calculators quietly go out of date. WorkCalc works differently in three ways.
Every figure comes from a primary source. NHS pay scales come from NHS Employers, not a summary site. Minimum wage rates come from the statutory instrument that sets them, as do statutory redundancy caps. Where sources disagree, we go back to the original.
Every number is computed, not typed. Salary tables are produced by the same tax engine that runs the calculator on each page, so the table and the tool cannot disagree.
Every page shows when it was last checked. Each page states which tax year it uses and the date its rates were verified, so you can tell at a glance whether it is current.
What changes each April
| Date | What changes | Calculators affected |
|---|---|---|
| 1 April | National Minimum and Living Wage, NHS pay award, NHS and Teachers' pension tiers | NHS tools, minimum wage, hourly pay, salary calculator |
| 6 April | Income tax bands, National Insurance, student loan thresholds, statutory redundancy cap | All salary and tax calculators |
| 6 April | Scottish income tax bands, which differ from the rest of the UK | Salary calculator and salary tables |
The £12,570 Personal Allowance and the £50,270 higher-rate threshold are frozen until April 2031, so more people move into higher tax bands each year even without a real pay rise.
Where we go further than the official tools
GOV.UK and ACAS are the authoritative sources, and we link to them throughout. What they usually do not do is show the working, handle unusual cases or point out the traps.
- Employers cannot round holiday down, a rule many holiday calculators ignore
- The marginal rate between £100,000 and £125,140 is 62%, not the 60% usually quoted, because National Insurance sits on top
- Inside IR35 you keep about 60% of a day rate, because employer National Insurance comes out of the assignment rate
- NHS and Teachers' pension tiers are set on actual pay, not full-time equivalent, which a lot of guidance still gets wrong
- Pro rata pay must still meet the minimum wage per hour, and some advertised salaries do not
For plain-English explanations of the rules behind these tools, read the WorkCalc guides.
Frequently asked questions
About the WorkCalc UK calculators.
Are the WorkCalc UK calculators free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup, no email and no usage limit. Every calculation runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent to a server, stored or shared.
Which calculators does WorkCalc UK offer?
26 tools are live. The main one is the UK salary calculator for take-home pay. There are also calculators for pay rises, tax codes, pension contributions, salary sacrifice, self-employed tax, hourly and pro rata pay, day rates, holiday entitlement, holiday pay, holiday accrual, notice periods, redundancy tax and employer National Insurance, plus four tools for NHS staff.
Are the calculators updated for 2026/27?
Yes. They use 2026/27 income tax, National Insurance and student loan thresholds, the £12.71 National Living Wage from 1 April 2026, the NHS Agenda for Change pay scales and pension tiers, and the £751 statutory redundancy weekly cap. Each page shows when its figures were last checked.
Are these official HMRC or government tools?
No. WorkCalc UK is independent and not affiliated with HMRC, GOV.UK, ACAS or NHS Employers. The calculators apply the same published rules and rates, but for anything binding check with GOV.UK, ACAS or a qualified professional.
Why do some results differ for Scotland?
Scotland sets its own income tax bands, so take-home pay differs from England, Wales and Northern Ireland at the same salary. NHS Scotland also has its own pay scales and moved to a 36-hour full-time week from 1 April 2026. The pages affected say so and let you choose Scotland.
